single-vehicle crash on Sunday afternoon resulted in the death of a 23-year-old pregnant woman from New York, as the  car she was riding in struck a wall on Route 9W.

There were five people in the vehicle, including the woman’s husband, their two-year-old child, her sister, and her brother-in-law, who was driving. It was raining during the accident, and police believe that the car hydro-planed on wet pavement.

Our hearts and condolences go out to the family during this difficult and tragic time.

New York City traffic crash data released

Posted on August 24th, 2010 No Comments

The Bloomberg administration released an ambitious traffic study last week, presenting New Yorkers with a wealth of statistical information on New York’s traffic accidents.

The 50-page report rejected some of the most commonly believed facts regarding traffic accidents, demonstrating that yellow taxis, trucks, and buses are involved in far fewer pedestrian accidents than private vehicles. No only that, but jaywalkers accounted for fewer pedestrian accidents than those who obeyed the traffic laws and wait for the ‘walk’ sign.

New York officials plan to re-engineer intersections and lower neighborhood speed limits in response to this data.

The study examined more than 7,000 crashes that involved the severe injury or death of a pedestrian in each of the  five boroughs between 2002 and 2006. Other interesting points of data include the fact that:

*Residents 65 and older make up 12 percent of the city’s population but account for 38 percent of pedestrian deaths.

*Motorcyclists were killed at a rate 18 times that of occupants of enclosed motor vehicles

Two off-duty police officers dead after crash

Posted on May 21st, 2010 No Comments

Police report that two off-duty police officers and four women were injured in a single-vehicle crash, possibly drunk drivingrelated, last Sunday.

Around 6:30 a.m., the officers were driving a 2009 Nissan Altima  home from a party.  Four women were riding in the car with the officers.

Police investigation suggests that the car struck a guardrail near the 233rd Street exit on the Bronx River Parkway. The car smashed through the railing, rolling down an embankment until it struck a pole.

The off-duty officers were both killed in the crash. All four women in the car were injured and taken to a local hospital, where they are in stable condition.

Authorities have attributed the accident to driver inattentiveness while waiting on results from a post-mortem blood test to determine if alcohol was involved.

Staten Island ferry crash injures dozens

Posted on May 14th, 2010 No Comments

On Saturday, the Andrew J. Barberi ferry crashed into a pier of its St. George terminal, causing dozens to be injured.

The crash occurred around 9:20 in the morning, as the 252 passengers and 18 crew members prepared to arrive at the Staten Island terminal. According to the National Transportation Safety Board and New York Department of Transportation, the ferry propelled itself into the pier, as investigations ruled out drug or alcohol-related causes or crew negligence. Video evidence supports that the crew members were carrying out their duties to the standards expected of them.

The ferry passed inspections both in 2009 and April of this year. However, the Andrew J. Barberi has historically been problematic. In 2003, pilot error caused a crash that killed 11 people. Since its maiden voyage in 1981, the ship has suffered from corrosion, a cockroach infestation, and, on its inaugural journey, a momentary loss of engine power. After this latest crash, the Department of Transportation said that the ship would be taken out of service.

Pepper sprayed woman reaches settlement with city

Posted on April 30th, 2010 No Comments

A New York woman was awarded a $65,000 settlement from the city Tuesday for the unnecessary pepper spraying by a police officer she was subjected to in a 2007 subway incident.

The Queens woman ran down an up-only stairwell on April 20, 2007, in her rush to catch a train. She hit several passerby with her bag, which attracted the attention of a nearby police officer.

The officer pursued her and stopped her near the train. When he asked to see her ID, she realized she had left it in another bag at her home. The woman became distraught and pulled out her cell phone, at which point the officer pepper sprayed her.

Police charged the woman with disorderly conduct and she spent around 15 hours in prison.

Screven’s attorney ridiculed the officer’s motive, explaining, “C’mon, this is New York City, bumping into three people while you’re trying to catch a train happens every day,” further adding, “The officer’s actions were over the top.”

NY Police officer critically injured in car chase

Posted on April 22nd, 2010 No Comments

A New York police officer suffered life-threatening injuries last night following a high speed chase around 9 p.m.

The chase began when a police officer identified a passing car as stolen. When he attempted to pull the driver over, the car sped off. Officers pursued the vehicle to South Broadway and Main Street where the driver smashed into a police officer’s car which was attempting to block his path.

Both vehicles sustained serious damage and their occupants had to be cut out. The officer who was struck by the stolen car was taken to Westchester Medical Center for treatment. He has already undergone several surgeries and remains in critical condition.

The driver of the stolen vehicle was tentatively identified as a 16-year-old Connecticut male  and is facing serious charges. He sustained injuries to his back and legs in the crash and was transported to Westchester Medical Center. Police are verifying his identity before bringing charges.

Luckily nobody else was injured in this tragic accident. Reckless drivers are a serious danger to innocent drivers on the road. If  you or someone you love has been the victim of a reckless driver, contact the Bronx reckless driver lawyers of Parker Waichman Alonso, LLP at 888-244-2273 today.

AARP launches statewide road safety inspection

Posted on April 20th, 2010 No Comments

City officials yesterday helped the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) launch a weeklong effort to assess the safety of New York City intersections for senior pedestrians.

Volunteers will rate intersections based on three factors: adequate traffic signals, well-marked crosswalks, and whether light changes are long enough for crossing time.

The campaign is a statewide effort to improve street conditions for senior pedestrians called “Complete Streets Week: Making NY Walkable for All Generations.”

The AARP will use the results of the investigation to lobby for new legislation to improve the safety of New York intersections for pedestrians.

NYC fined $5,000 for refusal to produce documents

Posted on April 13th, 2010 No Comments

The NYC mayoral administration has been fined $5,000 for their refusal to follow court orders demanding they provide the families of the men killed in a 2008 construction accident with documents and other information concerning the equipment supposedly inspected by the city.

This follows the lawsuits filed by the families of the two workers killed in the collapse of a crane on East 91st Street on May 2008. The families have targeted the New York City Buildings Department, the crane company, the company’s owner, and a number of others. The lawsuits allege that negligence and corruption within the organizations listed above led to the collapse and death of their family members.

The city was ordered to pay each of the families $2,500 for legal fees and lambasted by State Supreme Court Judge Paul G. Feinman for its “flagrant disregard” of the court’s orders. In March 2010 the owner of the crane company was indicted on manslaughter charges after he was accused of improperly repairing a number of known problems with the crane. The city inspector responsible for inspecting the crane has resigned following accusations of negligence on his part.
