New York City traffic crash data released

Posted on August 24th, 2010 No Comments

The Bloomberg administration released an ambitious traffic study last week, presenting New Yorkers with a wealth of statistical information on New York’s traffic accidents.

The 50-page report rejected some of the most commonly believed facts regarding traffic accidents, demonstrating that yellow taxis, trucks, and buses are involved in far fewer pedestrian accidents than private vehicles. No only that, but jaywalkers accounted for fewer pedestrian accidents than those who obeyed the traffic laws and wait for the ‘walk’ sign.

New York officials plan to re-engineer intersections and lower neighborhood speed limits in response to this data.

The study examined more than 7,000 crashes that involved the severe injury or death of a pedestrian in each of the  five boroughs between 2002 and 2006. Other interesting points of data include the fact that:

*Residents 65 and older make up 12 percent of the city’s population but account for 38 percent of pedestrian deaths.

*Motorcyclists were killed at a rate 18 times that of occupants of enclosed motor vehicles

New part of Leandra Law comes into effect next week

Posted on August 13th, 2010 No Comments

Starting Sunday August 15, a new part of the Leandra Law, which was proposed after the death of an 11-year-old girl in a drunk driving accident in October of 2009, will be put into effect.

The key element of the law will begin next week and states that anyone who is convicted of a drunk driving felony or misdemeanor will have to pay to have an interlock ignition device installed into their vehicle.

The device requires that a person blow into it before a car is turned on and if there is a certain level of alcohol on their breath, the vehicle will not start. These devices cost at least $100 to install and can be another $100 a month to maintain.

Two off-duty police officers dead after crash

Posted on May 21st, 2010 No Comments

Police report that two off-duty police officers and four women were injured in a single-vehicle crash, possibly drunk drivingrelated, last Sunday.

Around 6:30 a.m., the officers were driving a 2009 Nissan Altima  home from a party.  Four women were riding in the car with the officers.

Police investigation suggests that the car struck a guardrail near the 233rd Street exit on the Bronx River Parkway. The car smashed through the railing, rolling down an embankment until it struck a pole.

The off-duty officers were both killed in the crash. All four women in the car were injured and taken to a local hospital, where they are in stable condition.

Authorities have attributed the accident to driver inattentiveness while waiting on results from a post-mortem blood test to determine if alcohol was involved.

Staten Island woman sues city over car crash

Posted on May 7th, 2010 No Comments

A Staten Island woman sued the city this week claiming that a police officer ran a red light, striking her car and leaving her with serious neck injuries.

The suit alleges that the accident occured on January 21, around 9 a.m. The woman was turning left onto Signs Road from Richmond Avenue with a green turning arrow when the officer ran a red light while traveling towards the Staten Island Mall on Richmond, according to court documents.

The woman says that she suffered severe neck injuries as a result, although she admits to not having seen a physician for them. How much she is claiming in damages is unknown but it is in addition to at least $20,000 for car repair expenses.

A spokesman for the city Law Department said Wednesday that while they have not yet recieved the suit papers, once they do, city attorneys will be closely reading and responding to them.

NYPD officer dies after motorcycle crash

Posted on May 6th, 2010 No Comments

Andrew Sipp, a 45-year-old NYPD officer, died in medical care this Tuesday from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident a month ago.

Sipp was a member of the New York Police Department’s Highway Patrol. He was driving his motorcycle to work early morning on April 4 when two vehicles directly ahead of him collided. Sipp swerved to avoid the car accident, losing control of his motorcycle on the Bronx River Parkway and suffering severe head injuries despite the helmet he was wearing.

Officers from his own precinct arrived on the scene and he was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, where doctors placed him into a medically induced coma in an attempt to help him heal and save his life.

31 days later, Sipp finally succumbed to his injuries.

He leaves behind a wife and a 9-year-old daughter, who has cystic fibrosis. He and his wife spent much of their time raising money for the Greater New York chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and raising awareness about the disease.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Andrew Sipp.
